Group research - Women and "Las medias rojas"

Groups:
Group 1 (Robert, Samantha, Juan)
Group 2 (Derek, Sandra, Tamannah)
Group 3 (Ming Ming, Estebán, D'Andre)
Group 4 (Sarah, Flavio, Hector)

In your groups, research the following topics:
A) Domestic abuse in a Latin American country and the U.S.
B) Familial abuse in that same Latin American country and the U.S.
C) History of women's rights in that same Latin American country and the U.S.

Research schedule:
Monday-Tuesday: Each person should write at least 300 words about his/her topic (decide amongst yourselves who will research which topic and which Latin American country you will all research).

Wednesday-Thursday: Share your research paragraphs on a common thread with citations of at least 3 different sources in MLA format (9 sources total).  As always, your sites, writing, and conversations should be in Spanish.  Use that space to also discuss your presentation of this material in conjunction with the story "Las medias rojas".  You will be presenting a podcast that is a combination of history, current events, and literature.  Your podcast will be posted on your blogs for others to listen to and comment on.  See the following site for information on how to create a podcast (http://www.digitaltrends.com/how-to/how-to-make-a-podcast/#skip-video) and ask any questions about making podcasts here on my thread.

Wednesday-Sunday: Write the script and plan the transitions for your podcast.  It should be like a conversation on the radio, NOT like an in-class presentation.  Your podcast should last 8-12 minutes.

Make sure your podcast discusses the following:

  • Compare and contrast women's rights, domestic abuse, and familial abuse in your group's Latin American country and the U.S.
  • How is your research related to the story we read and discussed on our blogs and in class?
  • What was the purpose of the story?  
  • What was Pardo Bazán trying to accomplish and why?
  • Did she succeed?


Monday: You will have three chances to record your podcasts in class on the Renaissance software.  Come completely prepared with your scripts/transitions printed out and ready to go.  I will forward your audio files to you for editing.

Tuesday: Edit and upload podcasts to your blogs in class groups.

Wednesday-Thursday: Listen to the podcasts of the other groups and write at least two questions and make at least one thoughtful comment (Good job! or I agree! is not sufficient or useful discussion).  Respond to the questions and comments that others made on your podcast.

Friday: Fill out the AP speaking rubric for your assigned partner.  Focus only on that person's responses on the podcast, not the entire group's responses.  Assign a score for each category and write out the commentary that best correlates to your partner's speaking.  (Your partner may have some bullet points that are very low in a category and very high in that same category.  Provide that feedback, but also include an average score for that category).  This will be the only instance in which you will use English.  An example of appropriate feedback for topic development would be the following: You had "very well-organized and cohesive responses" (5) and "accurate social and/or cultural references included" (5) but "may have some irrelevant treatment of elements of the thread of the conversation" (2).  Therefore your score in topic development is a 4.  By the way, I really enjoyed your discussion of Ecuador.  I didn't know that they allowed women to vote in 1929!
Rubric partners - Do not post your rubric commentary on your partner's blog.  Send a copy of your comments to your partner's email and to my email.

Create a comic strip representation of the story "Las medias rojas" on ToonDoo http://www.toondoo.com.

Here is a sample portion of the story that I created.  Your comic should be longer than this mini-version and should have real Spanish dialogue.  Be creative.  Post your comic strip to your blog before class tomorrow.

Consider the following themes: 

  • Pobreza y la desesperación que cause por sobrevivir
  • Abuso físico familiar
  • La condición de la mujer en la sociedad
  • Abuso permitido a la mujer para controlar sus acciones
